Paintball Thermal Lenses

Paintball thermal lenses have become increasingly popular because of their ability to regulate goggle temperature and mitigate fogging during gameplay. These innovative thermal lenses have a dual-paned construction which helps prevent fogging due to temperature differences between the inside and outside of the lens. Many paintball goggle manufacturers have moved to only producing thermal lens goggles because of their superiority over traditional goggle systems. If you’ve bought paintball goggles in the last five years, chances are, your goggles use thermal lenses.

Given the aggressive nature of paintball, even the most rugged lenses can get scratched or damaged. Carrying an extra thermal lens or with you can help keep you safe and effective on the field in the event that another paintball thermal lens becomes damaged.

If your thermal lenses become damaged for whatever reason, changing them has become a relatively simple chore. Most modern paintball goggles are equipped with easy-change systems which allow lenses to be changed in a matter of seconds. This feature is particularly useful for adapting to changing light conditions, such as when it shifts from sunny to overcast, or during the transition from afternoon to evening. The varying colors of paintball goggle lenses serve more than aesthetic purposes; their tints enhance visibility by creating contrast in different lighting. For bright, sunny conditions, red and purple lenses are ideal, while yellow and orange lenses improve visibility in dimmer, low-light settings.

Frequently asked questions by paintballers

How do thermal goggles work?

A thermal paintball lens, also known as a dual pane lens, is designed to significantly reduce fogging during play. It consists of two lenses separated by about 1/8” with a foam gasket. The outer lens is standard thickness, while the inner one is thinner and lighter.

Fogging occurs when warm, moist air from your head and breath meets the cooler lens, similar to moisture condensation when bringing a cold object indoors. The thermal lens addresses this by creating an insulating air layer between the two lenses, allowing the inner lens to match the mask's interior temperature without being affected by the cooler external temperature. This design is more effective and longer-lasting than single-lens masks with anti-fog coating. However, in very high humidity, thermal lenses may still fog, in which case using a paintball goggle fan in conjunction with the thermal lens is the best solution for clear vision.

What are thermal lens goggles?

Thermal lens goggles offer players a lens that has less probability of fogging up. They are not thermal in the sense that they allow you to a person’s heat signature or allow thermal imaging. However, they are an excellent option for players that have had issues with their field of view being obstructed by fog in the past.

Can thermal lenses fog?

While thermal lenses tend to fog much less, than single-paned paintball lenses. However, in certain conditions, particularly in environments with very high humidity or extreme temperature differences, thermal lenses may still experience some fogging. In these situations, additional anti-fog measures like using anti-fog sprays, wipes, or a goggle fan might be necessary to maintain clear vision.
